NBA: Rockets take major step toward Melo, Lebron by trading Asik to Pelicans

After, endless trade requests by Omer Asik and endless attempts by the Houston Rockets to honor his request, a deal has finally been struck.

The Rockets have agreed to trade the big 7-foot center, and his $14 million contract to the New Orleans Pelicans, for their 2015 1st round pick. The Rockets also agreed to send $1.5 million in cash to the Pelicans.

The timing of the deal could not have been any better, as we’re just days away from what could be the start of another huge summer for the Rockets.

Obviously, the objective of this summer is to land either Carmelo Anthony, or Lebron James. This move was imperative for the Rockets to have enough cap space to make a serious pitch.

The Rockets, and GM, Daryl Morey are no strangers to huge off-season moves. In the last two seasons, they’ve traded for James Harden and acquired Dwight Howard via free agency, respectively.

This is probably just the beginning. It’s becoming more and more likely that the Rockets will try to rid themselves of Jeremy Lin and his big contract. If successful, they would clear nearly $30 million between Asik and Lin. That could be enough to make a serious pitch at Melo or Lebron and still possibly keep Chandler Parsons.

That would be a huge deal and would definitely make the Rockets a serious candidate to dethrone the San Antonio Spurs.
