Since all-star power forward, Kevin Love, announced he wanted a change of scenery from Minnesota, once he becomes a free agent after the 2015 NBA season, the trade rumors have been rampant. Some of the rumored deals have been quite intriguing, but none quite as intriguing as the Golden State Warriors rumored offer of sharp shooter, Klay Thompson.
The rumored deal could include David Lee coming over from the Warriors. The T’Wolves would also send Kevin Martin and J.J. Barea to the Bay Area. There are also variations of the deal that include a draft pick coming from the Warriors.
The deal, even in its rumor stages seems to have already hit a snag. There are reports, that the Warriors have no interest in taking back Martin, which could kill the deal.
No other rumored deal has made this much sense from the Timberwolves standpoint. There have been rumors of offers from the Denver Nuggets that include Kenneth Faried. There will be other rumored deals along the way, but the T’Wolves will be hard pressed to find a better offer, than getting Klay Thomson in return.
Thompson, is one of the most dangerous 3-point shooters in the game and would be a nice complement to point guard, Ricky Rubio, who is not a good perimeter shooter. Adding in a guy like David Lee at power forward will not replace Love’s ability as a ‘Stretch 4’, but his rebounding ability is almost equal to Love. Lee, is also a better defender, and it’s not like he can’t score (2013 PPG: 18.2). The biggest disparity is age. Lee is 31, while Love is only 25. Quite a big difference, but Thompson, who is only 24, could be Minnesota’s shooting guard for the next 10 years.
The Warriors, of course would benefit from having one of the NBA’s best power fowards. Love’s ability to shoot from the perimeter is well documented, but he could be even better playing alongside Stephen Curry. The pick-and-roll game these two could have would be scary. Curry, is already one of the best slashers to the basket from the guard position, and he’s an excellent passer. While, Lee is a good rebounder, Love is outstanding. The Warriors need an upgrade in the front-court and Love provides that plus the ability to stretch the floor.
There’s a lot of sentiment going around, that the Warriors should not break up they’re talented back-court. Understandable, but I beg to differ. While, they are dynamic, and just overall fun to watch, can the Warriors add the remaining pieces necessary to contend for NBA titles? It would be very difficult. Even more difficult playing in the rugged Western Conference. Obviously, you don’t want to get rid of Curry, so Thompson may be the odd man out. Tough move for the Warriors, but one you have to make if a player like Love becomes available. Besides, it’s a lot easier to replace a shooting guard, than it is to acquire a 6′-10″ , 3-point shooting, rebounding machine.
I think this deal helps the Warriors be a bigger player in the Western Conference immediately, and I think the Timberwolves get a lot of value in return, as they continue to build their franchise. We’ll see how this one turns out, but this is only one rumored deal of many, many to come. It’s going to be a very intriguing summer around the NBA….
